What do you need before you start?
Three things:
- DaVinci Resolve Studio (not the free version: Workflow Integrations are a Studio-only feature)
- RoughCut by DrRave, downloaded and installed
- Your raw footage imported into DaVinci Resolve
- Your script saved as a plain .txt file
RoughCut installs as a Workflow Integration, which means it will not appear in the Workspace menu on the free version of DaVinci Resolve. Upgrade to Studio first.
Step 1: How do you prep your media pool for a YouTube edit?
Get your footage into the media pool and sorted into bins before running RoughCut. If you shoot with more than one camera, or you mix main camera footage with a GoPro, drone, or second angle, sort your bins first. A disorganised media pool slows down the review step after RoughCut runs.

Step 2: How do you format your script for RoughCut?
Save your script as a plain .txt file. RoughCut reads it line by line and matches each line to the transcribed audio from your clips. The closer your spoken delivery matches your written script, the more accurate your assembly will be.
You do not need a word-for-word match. Natural ad-libs and small deviations are handled fine. What matters is that the script reflects your overall structure: intro, main points in order, outro. If you improvised heavily or went off-script for entire sections, add a rough description of those sections as placeholder lines so RoughCut has something to work with.
For tutorial and how-to videos with numbered steps, include those step headings in your script. RoughCut uses them to divide the assembly into logical sections.

Step 4: How do you refine the assembly into your final YouTube cut?
Your rough cut is a first draft, not a finished video. Start with the red and purple markers. Red means a reshoot or a section to cut entirely. Purple means B-roll is needed over that clip.
After the markers are handled, tighten pacing. YouTube audiences are quick to click away, so trim the slow sections from the front and back of clips and close the gaps between sentences. This is where keyboard shortcuts do the most work. The faster you can ripple-trim and navigate the timeline without touching the mouse, the faster this step goes.
